The ramp. The Achilles heel of the scenario.

It's rumoured that the scheme is now looking for even further funding, presumably to attend to the ramp situation, and thus make the whole make over viable. Which would be wonderful if it were to be achieved, but on the other hand it would justify a "Well, we tried...........and it couldn't be done" response.

Some statement of clarity would be rather welcome at this point.

Quite frankly, certainly if you are under 12, the ramp is the major draw at the Powis Hall at the moment.

The article says:
"Oswestry Town Council has pledged up to £50,000 for the redevelopment of the Powis Hall indoor market."

At Wednesday's meeting with David Preston and the Council, I got the impression that the £50,000 was to match MyDeco's money, for the makeover.

It doesn't appear to be totally clear if this pledged amount includes the 'whole' of the redevelopment, as is suggested in the newspaper quote, or if it is matching MyDeco's amount for the makeover.

The Town Council owns the building, and is legally obliged to deal with the problem of the ramp, which doesn't comply with current Health and Safety regulations. The Council has been holding back from replacing the ramp, due to the large cost it would incur.

I'm under the impression that Health and Safety 'could' close the ramp at any time, should they wish to enforce the law, and that the Town Council, at some point, have to comply with the law if they wish to continue to use the building.

Due to the nature of the 'ramp' issue, and because it's a long-standing cost which the Council would at some time be obliged to face, I would assume that the Mydeco makeover would not be saddled with this extra expense, but that the Council would be financing the redevelopment of the ramp and it's replacement, over and above what they are pledging for the makeover.

I do think that this could do with some clarification.

Well, having been in Morrisson's today - I notice three things:

1. It spends the whole time trying to APPEAR to be a market, when it's not ("Your local fishmonger" and "Market Street" signs - for goodness sake, grow up Morrisson's)

2. It's not a patch on a REAL Market.

3. Once the outdoor and indoor Oswestry Market get's it's act together, you will CLEAN UP.

Really. Supermarkets are convenient and boring. Markets can be rich, diverse, fun, great value and hugely enjoyable.

No competition.

If there were buskers in a Morrisson's aisle, you'd never make it to the butter. :)

The council met on Wednesday night to discuss funding and a meeting with traders is to be held this coming Wednesday.
Watch this space.....

Well done David Preston........ a manager who can run the place well and who can market it within the region would now be essential if this money is not to be wasted. A revamp is one thing - but useless without getting the place full of occupied and varied stalls and pulling people in from the region - 20 miles radius. It should be marketed and run as THE alternative to the supermarkets.

Slate hung infill is v ugly and forbidding, simple coloured panels or coloured render, and a similar treatment of the columns could give the building, if not beauty, a certain funkiness that would be visible from down Bailey Street - and more transparency through the frontage would make it much more inviting and less forbidding. The fact is that this is a perfectly serviceable building for its function, and with some thought and input, could pull its self up from the torpor into which it's been allowed to decline.

Sadly all rather tainted by Keith Barrows insistence that it should be pulled down. For no particular reason as there has been no consistency of concept from him about its replacement. Office accommodation has been mentioned, with an ice rink round the back. Hmmmm. He has recently backtracked somewhat by saying a market should replace the market, but then we actually already have a market. If this is blue sky thinking, gimme a thunderstorm.

As a Bailey Head trader I often look at the front of the Powis Hall and think..." Does it look inviting? If I did not live/work here would I actually know there are 30+ stalls behind those 3 that are visible on the steps? The answer is a resounding...NO!
My ideas....
* Do away with the grey slate pillars, even if they were only rendered and painted in a light colour it would look so much fresher.
* Do away with the wall behind the 3 front traders, either have it completely open to those inside OR have a glass wall....it will bring light into the indoor market, look very attractive and make the indoor traders visible to those approaching and draw them in....
Exciting times ahead...:o))

Branding and Marketing.

Social Space as well as place of commerce.

Shopping Plus - retail as social experience.

WI FI and Internet cafe

Moveable Stalls? - more multi functional space.

Encourage younger demographic - families, youth etc. without alienating existing users.

Logical and fair approach to stall rents and allocation.

Ensure makeover scheme is something that will not appear dated in a short time. Simplicity - Less is always More.
